Counseling for Professional Moms in North Carolina
You’re the One Everyone Relies On, and You’re Alone With It
At work in Charlotte or Raleigh or Durham, you’re the one who makes things happen, the colleague who never drops the ball, the one they put on the hard projects because you’ll figure it out.
At home, you’re the one who knows when picture day is and which kid outgrew their shoes and what’s in the fridge.
Your partner, if you have one, genuinely helps, but they’d have to ask you every single question to do what you do automatically, and asking takes longer than just doing it. So you do it, and you do all of it.
The mental load is a thing you carry without anyone else being able to see it. Your friends think you have it together, the other moms at school think you have it together, and your own kid probably thinks you have it together, which is either the goal or the problem or both.
You’ve been running on adrenaline and caffeine and list-making for so long that your body no longer knows what rest feels like. When you try to sit still, your legs bounce, and when you try to sleep, your brain starts sorting tomorrow. You can’t remember the last Sunday night that didn’t feel like bracing.
More about my approach to working with professional moms here.
What You’ve Already Tried
You’ve tried waking up earlier so you could get ahead of the day, going to bed earlier so you could catch up on sleep, and the whole menu of systems, the color-coded family calendar, the shared grocery app, the meal prep Sunday, the evening reset routine the moms on Instagram keep talking about.
Some of it helped a little, but none of it touched the dread.
Some of my clients have done real therapy that helped them understand themselves, and they come to me because they’re ready for the next layer of work.
Insight gets you part of the way there, and then there’s a point where understanding why stops being the thing that shifts things. What shifts things is working with the part of you that’s been treating ordinary life like a threat for so long that it doesn’t know how to stop, which is the part systems and planners and better discipline don’t reach.
My Approach to Therapy for Professional Moms in North Carolina
I’m Dr. Emily Fornwalt, a licensed therapist in North Carolina, and I work with high-achieving moms whose success has come at the cost of their sleep, their patience, and their ability to rest.
My approach is called AEDP, and it works with the part of you that’s stuck on high alert, not just the part of you that can explain why. The shifts show up in your actual week, in how you feel at 4pm Sunday, how you sleep Sunday night, and how you show up Monday morning, which is usually the layer that’s hardest to move through talking alone.
I keep a small caseload, around ten clients, so I remember your situation and I’m thinking about it between sessions.
I’m direct, warm, and I’m going to treat your ambition as the skill it is, not as something to unwind. You built this life on purpose, and I’m here to help you be in it without white-knuckling your way through every Sunday afternoon.
How Therapy With Me Helps Professional Moms in North Carolina
It’s Sunday at 4pm and you’re reading a book, and you’ve been on the same page long enough to have thoughts about it. You’re not skimming while mentally planning tomorrow; you’re just reading.
Monday morning you wake up and the first thing you do isn’t reach for your phone. The coffee is still hot when you drink it. You take a shower without mentally composing your first email, and you walk into your first meeting having had a morning instead of having survived one.
The weekend feels like rest, because you’re not catching up on chores the whole time and you’re not mentally triaging next week. At your kid’s soccer game, you’re watching the game instead of scrolling your phone, and when they look over at you from the field, you’re looking back.
You sleep. Not perfectly, but the 3am wake-ups stop being every night, and your body starts to trust that when you lay down, it’s allowed to rest.
